Back to school health checklist
Now that your kids are back in school here’s a quick checklist to make sure you haven’t forgotten or missed anything during this busy time. Look beyond just new clothes, pencil cases, and shiny new shoes. To ensure a healthy year ahead, here’s a quick and simple health checklist to help you keep track before this busy year gets crazy.
Have your child’s vision tested if you haven’t done so recently. Remember, up to 80% of learning is visual, so ensure your child is set up for success by making sure they can see properly in the classroom.
Regular dental checkups begin at a very young age. If your child hasn’t had their teeth examined prior to starting school, now is a good time for it. Regular checkups and cleanings help detect and prevent dental problems early.
Make sure the school has up-to-date emergency numbers, including contact information for parents, physicians, etc.
Ensure the school has up-to-date information about any physical impairments or medical conditions your child may have, including any new allergies. Also inform the school about any medications your child takes.
Your child’s backpack should fit properly and shouldn’t be too heavy for him or her to carry. It shouldn’t be more than 10% to 15% of their total body weight and should have broad shoulder straps and a waist strap that keeps the bag firmly against the spine. Watch for warning signs that the bag may be too heavy to carry such as sore shoulders or changes in posture like stooping or hunching.
Ensure your child has a healthy breakfast before heading to school in the mornings, and pack a nutritious lunch and plenty of snacks that are healthy.
